As Time Goes On…

I have been working very hard on the Uplift project and between that and my work that pays the bills, time has been very short. I’m not posting any of the photos from the Uplift Project here at this time. If you want to glimpse some of the photos the place to go is Kickstarter.com where I’m trying to raise money for this project. I’ll add the link at the end.

This has been a very fascinating project. It won’t be presented until March 2011 but the preparation is ongoing right now. Once I get the photos edited the way I want them I will print them no smaller that 20×24. I think larger. I am thinking that the B&W photos may be done on silver gelatin and the color printed with inkjet technology. The way I’m leaning is toward making them like competition prints. That means they will be mounted on a mat board or other material to a specific thickness then hangers added to the back.

I like the idea of the photographs not being in frames and mats and all that. When people buy them they will just reframe them anyway. This way there is no framing treatment competition going on with the piece. For a show I did during my college days I mounted all the prints and put them between two pieces of glass with a hangar. I’ve not done that since so I think minimalist is the way I’m going.

The latest 100 in 365 is a photo of a glass door. I worked to bring the detail out in this photo to add a bit of a surreal quality to it. I love the use of negative space.

As I keep exploring with this 100 in 365 project I’m finding ideas that I have wanted to express for a long time coming out. Of course, I’m not interested in the commercial value, I’m looking for the art value which deals in emotions and how we “see” the world. I have added several new photos so head over and LOOK.

I’m working with a new image technique using a plug-in called Lucis Pro 6.0. I’m finding it to allow me to dig deeper into the emotional elements of these photos.

What moves us

As an artist I guess I look at the world differently than most. I’m not just interested in the how of things but also the why of things. When I first heard about fractual geometry it never really occored to me that there even needed to be a geometry that would describe the construction of a cloud or tree branch.

But as I spent time looking at these objects and how foreign they are to our way of seeing the world you had to wonder where this “other” geometry came from. Why do we need two sets of rules if we all live in the same place. Of course the answer is we don’t. We can only think of things to a certain point. Then some greater power takes over and finishes things we can’t. I think part of the reason art exists is because some of us are trying to explain the connection between these two places. Those of us open enough to except any possibility.

I happen to think this power that drives fractal geometry also drives us, but we spend most of our lives running away from it.
