I have worked this photo through many version trying to get at the emotion I was after. I think I’m there. I didn’t want to make it disturbing but it is important you see this place differently. A common sight in uncommon light. Click on the image to see a larger version.

As I keep working on the 100 in 365 project I’m also creating images that seem to belong to a story I’m working out. This image is from Ft. Worth Texas. It was taken about 1973 on Tri-X film pushed to 1600 ISO. I scanned the negative and did extinsive procesing using Lightroom and Photoshop.

I am still pushing into photographs that have a darkness to them. I’m trying to look into those places in between where most people don’t. Part of the story of our humanity rests in these lonely places where darkness dwells even in broad daylight and fear seeps from the very ground. To try and pull this emotion together takes a combination of locating the image to photograph and then “seeing” it through this pair of glasses. That requires a lot of post processing but I see the original image they way it ends up and the struggle is to get the image to reflect what I’m seeing when I shoot it.

I am exploring the dark nature of our minds and how the everyday can suddenly take on a look that evokes fear, terror or unease. There is so much of this in the journalistic photographs we see everyday. To think that this fear and unknowing surrounds us all the time can be a very disturbing thought.

Of course, I’m not interested in the commercial value, I’m looking for the art value which deals in emotions and how we “see” the world. I have added several new photos so head over and LOOK.

As an artist I guess I look at the world differently than most. I’m not just interested in the how of things but also the why of things. When I first heard about fractual geometry it never really occored to me that there even needed to be a geometry that would describe the construction of a cloud or tree branch.

But as I spent time looking at these objects and how foreign they are to our way of seeing the world you had to wonder where this “other” geometry came from. Why do we need two sets of rules if we all live in the same place. Of course the answer is we don’t. We can only think of things to a certain point. Then some greater power takes over and finishes things we can’t. I think part of the reason art exists is because some of us are trying to explain the connection between these two places. Those of us open enough to except any possibility.

I happen to think this power that drives fractal geometry also drives us, but we spend most of our lives running away from it.

In a search for finding objects in the world that emit a natural emotional energy, the photographer finds himself at times helplessly looking around at a world that seem flat out boring. Catching that moment when the art the world has to offer flashes by can be frustrating. Almost always you are never ready, unless you take the time to really plan what it is you are doing.

I have no problem with the planning part. I do that but it is the fleeting shots that get away that drive me crazy. On a cab ride to see the play Democracy I caught that moment. Rain streaked the window and fog from my body heat was clouding the glass. Trees were whizzing by as I worked my Leica to grab that moment. And yes! With the great post processing tools available and a lot of time the piece is born. I truly love the emotion of the photograph.
