Passages

I started thinking about passages last nigh. Not dirty hallways in haunted houses but the passage of a milestone in life.

Last night we had one as Meghan, my High School Senior, received her pin for lettering in volleyball. We all listened to the words of the seniors as they bid farewell to an experience that will never come again.

For a few short weeks a group of girls came together to create Shawnee Mission East’s Varsity Volleyball team 2011. Each one brought their own skills, ability to learn, and personality. This year this group of girls won their league championship. Their record 10 and 1.

They all played. They all felt the pain of failure. They never gave up.

And today the team is no more and never to be again The seniors High School career is done.

What’s funny is the girls in their youth and energy don’t really have a sense of all this. They played, had fun, won league, and now on to Christmas and even more exciting; college.

Only us old adults get maudlin when we see a passage take place. There aren’t many. ‘

It all reminds me to live everyday like it’s my last. I still have my dreams and still wonder what I’ll be when I grow up.

It reminds me of the time Itzhak Perlman told his audience, “You know, sometimes it’s the artist’s task to find out how much music you can still make with what you have left.”

We all have some left. Lets make some music.
