Editing & Rewriting

Old Block Island Post Card

I’m back from vacation and finished with all the reentry issues you seem to have after being gone awhile. Things like slogging through three thousand emails! Patti and I went back to Block Island for about two and a half weeks of peace. Block Island is thirteen miles off Rhode Island’s coast so it is surrounded by the ocean. Block Island Sound to the north and the Atlantic to the east. Mostly it is cool and breezy there. We stay at a hotel called the Atlantic Inn. It’s like stepping back into time. No TVs in the rooms. No air conditioning so you keep the windows open and get a lot of that wonderful sea air. It’s as close as I can get to taking Patti camping.

What they do have is an amazing front porch where tapas and drinks are served every afternoon at five. The hotel sits up on a hill overlooking Old Harbor and all the way up to the north end of the island. It is peaceful. Interesting people to talk to great food and drinks plus lots of time just sitting together in the quiet. I also spent time running around on my rented scooter exploring all the places I used in the book I just finished writing. Lots of ideas leading to lots of notes to be used while I edit this manuscript.

I find that editing my work takes a completely different part of my mind from that used to create a novel. Left brain stuff I guess. You still have to dip back into that world and the people you put there to rewrite stuff but it is just not the same. Patti loves the editing part. Me, not so much. I keep cutting stuff out but after I’m done with a chapter the manuscript is longer than it was before I started! Guess it’s that unpackingthing going on. I see where I need to open things up and use more words to better paint a picture. Now the novel is over the 120,000 word point and I’m only on page 99 of a 340 page manuscript. Ugh.

I’ll publish some bits and pieces here over the next few weeks. The novel is called Legends of the Endand it is another story about Robin Randle but very different from the first book. I told several people about the project while I was on Block Island and got a lot of interesting and encouraging feedback. The entire novel takes place there. Stay tuned to find out if I live through this editing nightmare.
